Hoping to avoid a summer-long bloodbath for the Democratic presidential nomination, some party leaders such as Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen have urged a convention of superdelegates in June, after the caucuses and primaries are over.
The idea sounds exotic, but recent public declarations and Politico interviews with top Democratic officials have made clear that something like what Bredesen proposed is already underway — not with a big meeting but with an intensifying series of exchanges among party elites.
The early voting in this virtual convention is bad news for Hillary Rodham Clinton. Her hope that Democratic leaders will settle the nomination is starting to come true — with Barack Obama so far emerging as the beneficiary.
After a 10-day slog of self-inflicted wounds and fatalistic headlines for Clinton, these party elders are clearly tilting against her hopes for keeping the nomination contest open indefinitely.
And the article goes on to say...
Describing the mood in Washington, a top Democratic strategist who supports Clinton said: "There's a little bit of a deathwatch going on. Instead of, 'Who's going to win?' the chatter is, 'How's it going to unfold?'"
The strategist added: "There is general panic among Democrats. The big question is: Does she walk to the door, or is she shown to the door?"
And still more from the original article:
This gathering momentum has forced the Clintons into Hail Mary arguments, causing even some confidants to wonder about their logic or real aims. Bill Clinton recently pointed out that she was ahead in the popular vote in primaries, as opposed to caucuses — essentially saying she's ahead in contests she has won.
"They're trying everything, and nothing is sticking," said a Clinton family adviser. "It is possible she's trying to leverage all this into a spot on the ticket."
I will believe it when I see it. The party leaders have been doing a lot of posturing, but Hillary has been dictating the course of the party. If they don't do something by June, I will be convinced that they are willing to throw this political season under the bus until 2012.
Neither side seems to be concerned about the American people. They only seem to care about self serving agendas.
As I've said before Independent Rob, I've no reason to defend the Democratic Party. The problems we have in this country are because of party politics. Having said that, it makes sense to me that the party bosses may be trying to settle this behind the scenes and allow Hillary some grace, in the whole process. Whether I like it or not, she has a lot of supporters. And the party bosses have to find a way to settle this so that her supporters feel as though their voices have been heard.
If they shut this thing down now (because the math makes it impossible for her to win) then they'll have a huge problem convincing her supporters that the ONLY reason they shut it down was simple logistics. In the minds of her supporters, she'll have been shut out by the party bosses because she's a woman. So, in a way - it's in the best interest of party unity to let this go (at least through Pennsylvania - and see where we are) meanwhile - work behind the scenes to let Clinton know how the cards are stacking up.
I honestly hope, more of the super-delegates come out publicly in favor of Obama. Then there will be even more math stacking up in the public arena.
I agree with you, but these things should have been done after the 11 straight victories. I am sure that if it was Al Gore winning 11 straight, the shift would have been swift, and she would have been shown the exit door with a large footprint on the seat of her pants. Now we have two weakened Candidates in an election where either was sure to win. After the Ticker Tape parade Hillary will have in her PA victory, it will become even more complicated and the party will be even more divided.
I think any action then will be too little too late. If they take any action at all.

Breaking News: Obama closes to within in 5 Points of Clinton in Pennsylvania :)
Hillary may not get that Ticker Tape parade after the PA primary.
1. Dept is stacking up in her campaign.
2. Obama is bringing in more super-delegates than she is and closing the gap in her super-delegate lead.
3. Clinton is going down in national polls and now it seems in PA polls as well.
She may be singing her last verses Independent Rob, I wouldn't be on it. But reality is a hard thing to change - even if you are a Clinton.
I think that is simply an expectations game being played against Obama. Remember New Hampshire? PA is Hillary Country, she will win big there. The Expectations game is always played against Obama, but the states he is expected to win, the expectations for her by the media and polls are always low. When the expectations are low, the defeat has less effect on the supporters. That's why political pundits call it the "expectations game"
Don't get me wrong, I pray to God almighty that he win there. But truthfully, she should be expected to win big, and anything less than a 8 point victory for her should be considered a poor performance.
You may be right, Independent Rob. But, she's been shooting herself in the foot a lot, lately. Her vicious campaign tactics may be finally back-firing on her. (That is my hope at least).
Yeah you are right, but think about it. The reason why she is still in it after Obama has won 30 states, is because she has played the expectation's game to the MAX. Example, New Hampshire. Before Iowa, she was polled in New Hampshire to win by a landslide, but after Iowa, Obama was expected to win there by the same margin. Raising his expectations through the roof. She looking pitiful and the camp looks defeated. Then she wins! Making her look like the comeback kid in a state she was sure to win, while at the same time giving him a crushing defeat in a state he had no chance to win. The 30 states Obama has won, were all passed off by the Hillary camp as states she wasn't expected to win anyway. The expectations game is a very powerful tool in politics, that's why both sides are constantly trying to lower them.
High expectations lowers motivation to turn out, because supporters believe their candidate has it in the bag. High expectations lowers morale when the candidate is defeated, and it makes the person with the low expectation appear to have momentum. Obama always seems to be on the victim end of false high expectations. I don't trust any of these polls when they put him higher than expected.
Your points are well taken Independent Rob. I am holding my breath for PA and hoping folks out there KNOW how important their state is this year and turn out in huge numbers.
Well something is happening out there, because registration is extremely high.
Well something is happening out there, because registration is extremely high.
I'm on more than a few Obama list-serves - through groups on his website. For weeks volunteers from states all over the union have been pouring into PA to register voters. The registration deadline was sometime last week (I think).
I'm sure the Clinton camp has folks coming in as well. But, bottom-line, Obama's campaign is more organized and better financed. So, my guess is that the efforts to register voters by Obama volunteers has been more successful. I don't know - until the goal is achieved it is best to just keep pushing forward and not let all the polls impact you (one way or the other). Only time will tell ....
Is it that Hillary is to proud to accept defeat? Remember the Clintons have not tasted defeat since the single setback in Arkansas. They even won the impeachment of Bill. Then we need to look at how they view themselves,as Political Royalty, which may have affected (over time) the Clintons acceptance of reality. Let's look at just three of their statements. Examples:- (1) Hillary - "Ready from Day One, I have years of experience" (Hillary displays superiority and her right to the nomination, Obama is not equal to her). (2) Bill - "This is a fairy tale, gimme a break". (Bill is the holder of reality and Obama's position is unreal. He dismisses Obama's challenge) (3) Chelsea - I don't speak with reporters and that includes you", "that is not your business".(Chelsea grows up spoilt, as an only child and sees herself above questioning. She is not answerable to anyone she perceives as below her level). The fact is that power affects people in many ways. It humbles some and it causes some to live outside the realms of reality. Some are intolerant of opposition, while others see power as an entitlement. There are also those elitists who wait for the lesser ones to finally realise that they have made a mistake and eventually fall in line to anoint the real leaders "willing and able to lead" the lesser mortals out of their misery.
